Dad'ing in Silence
Last night my son and I laid around in bed for an hour or so quietly reading comics (him: Calvin & Hobbes; me: Batman) and it was one of my best moments of being a parent.

Dad Solo*
Carrie went out of town for a work conference over the weekend. It was just me and the kids all weekend...and mom, who stayed over both nights. Mom went with us to a dance recital, to the mall, and cleaned the house while I took the twins out for frozen yogurt (and a beer for me!) She also hosted the kids at her house Sunday while I went to Walmart. Oh, and Saturday night Tracy brought Conner over Saturday night and cooked enchiladas for us. I had a lot of help and am grateful for it. Carrie thinks I had it too easy.
Jesse picked up and delivered a dog run for us over the weekend as well. It's going to serve as the fencing for the chicken coop. Now I just need to get chicken wire and try to predator-proof the thing as best I can. The chickens are getting big and are starting to investigate what's outside of the Rubbermaid tub we've kept them in up till now.
Last night, after Carrie got back, we cooked Sunday dinner. This makes 3 weeks in a row, I think? Maybe a solid month of having folks over on the weekend for at least one meal, whether Saturday or Sunday (or both.) Feels good to be entertaining. And since we don't really live in a close-knit neighborhood I like he feeling of providing the kids some minor sense of community. Anyway, Alex and mom were over for fajitas and we ate out on the patio. We'll probably be doing a lot more of that in the near future.
Abby woke up around 3am last night. She has been consistently sleeping through the night for a while now, so that was a little bit of a surprise. What wasn't surprising was that after that I couldn't get back to sleep. I tossed and turned a bunch and ended up reading comics (Saga, fantastic book) for hours. Never did get back to sleep. I hope it's not a the start of a trend, either for Abby or me.

Comics Now!
I've been perusing comics of late. The Marvel Now! titles, specifically. Haven't done the single issue thing in a while and it was kind of jarring at first. How the hell does anyone keep track of what's going on in these comics reading them one at a time? Turns out the secret is you read stuff you like, not just everything you can get your hands on. So 5 months or so into Marvel Now! here are the titles that I'm digging, and a short bit about why I like em.
Avengers - big world problems are cool but mostly the New Universe throwback that's popped up. I like that bit better than anything that's being done with the actual Avengers characters.
Superior Spider-Man - watching Doc Octopus try to be a hero, because he knows he can do it better.
Hawkeye - feels kind of like a Daredevil reboot, but the street-level hero, everyman bit is written really well and the characterization is great.
Captain America - crazy alien weirdness and removing Cap's baggage to get a better look at the person he is and how he came to be that way.
Thor - a compelling story spanning three ages of the thunder god has a lot of potential. Not sure they are living up to the potential, or where they'll go after the Godkiller, but I'm digging this story. And the art.
Fantastic Four - yet another 'back to their roots' but a fun ride nevertheless. I'm on board more for the wild science tales than the characters, but I'm still on board.
All New X-Men/Uncanny X-Men - both written by Bendis, so it's no real surprise they're like two sides of the same coin. The coherence of voice is probably one the most attractive things about the pair. Also, very X-Men-y with enough humor to offset the heaviness of the constant moral quandaries.
Wolverine & The X-Men - I want to like this one more. I'm mostly digging it, but not as much as some of the others. Feels like they're not spending enough time at school, which feels like what the book is supposed to be about. But I did come into it late, so...
Others I'm enjoying to a lesser degree, or haven't seen enough of to decide: Journey Into Mystery, Guardians of the Galaxy, Savage Wolverine, Secret Avengers.
Oh, and also there's Age of Ultron, which feels like a What If? book more than anything else. It's fun, though.

Make Mine
I've taken to reading comics again lately. And by comics I mean superhero books, namely of the Marvel variety. I think something Sage mentioned about AvX piqued my interest, so I got a hold of that storyline and blazed through it. It lit a fire for more Marvel stuff. In the past week I've read that and all of Young Avengers. Now I'm turning toward the Marvel Now! releases. All this with a book half-finished and other novels clamoring for attention in my brains.

Pushers
In addition to making small strides (ahem) in walking, the kids have
started pushing things all over the house and walking behind as they do.
They've made their way around the house with their walking toys for a
while now, but recently other objects have started enabling their
controlled falls across the tiled vastness of our open architecture. Of
late these objects include a laundry basket, strollers, and a metal
chair.
Bought the first set of our new car seats today. We're getting a 'cheaper' set for everyday use (read: Carrie's car) and a set with more features (cup holders, really) for the longer trip car, or mine. These come in the waning days of their first year of life, and will replace the detachable seat & base version we've used up till now. Having to buy four is not inexpensive, even going with relatively 'inexpensive' seats. But, safety!
Whatever settled upon my sinuses in the early hours of Saturday has continued its colonization attempts since then. Called in sick to work today, although I have high hopes that whatever it is will be successfully repelled in the next little while. Another day of the same may force me to seek outside biological assistance in this battle. For now, chemical warfare (sudafed and ibuprofen) My wife, wonderful lady that she is, has been masterfully handling most of the baby duties through it all.
I read a bunch of Savage Dragon comics whilst recumbent with illness. Weird, the nostalgic relations there; Dark Sun and Rifts, reading the former waiting in a car outside Cody's house, picking him up to got to Ren's to play the latter, springs most readily to mind. I wonder if that timeframe's right. Anyway, it's not a very good comic. Made it through 30-some issues, then decided to get some more recent Marvel stuff, that is from the beginning Heroic Age, or last year this time. Read the 4-issue Heroic Age vignette series, now am looking at the Thanos Imperative. Not sure if I shouldn't rethink that and get at some Avengers or Fantastic Four instead. My recent foray into the DC reboot, and now this, just reaffirm that I fall solidly on the Marvel side of the comic divide. Although, weirdly, I historically tend to like the animated versions of DC characters somewhat better. Young Justice has been pretty cool lately, and I even admire the campiness of Batman: Brave and the Bold, though I have yet to really watch an episode all the way through.

50/50 Weekend
Had a fine Friday off. I slimed the tires of Carrie's new stroller.
One had gotten a puncture and that machine is too awesome to be sitting
around not strollering. I also got some Corner Deli. That's be becoming a
Friday off thing. Also played some Gears of War 3 horde mode with
Cameron, and some of the campaign solo. Oh, and they delivered the
replacement freezer. Time to fill it up with frozen dinners and pizzas.
In lieu of rpg'ing Friday night (Kyle was out) we played some King of the Elves. I think we were all more in the mood for just hanging out anyway. Made for a laid back evening that we wrapped earlier than usual, so I came home and played some more Gears.
Woke up in the early hours this morning feeling feverish. That started a day of general crappiness; vaguely cold and/or allergy symptoms all day long. I was supposed to take the kids over to mom's this afternoon to get them out of the house for a Rendi thing Carrie was hosting. Instead I holed up in the bedroom and HBO Go'd and Savage Dragon'd on the iPad. Luckily mom was coming over for the party so she helped wrangle the kids, and they mostly napped through it anyway. Even now I still feel wrung out. Hopefully it will fade overnight.
